The Trinity in My Soul

Indwelling Trinity

The most important, the most unknown, and the most forgotten reality for a Christian is that by Faith, Baptism and grace, the Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit dwells in our soul. Heaven is within you. When we pray, “Our Father, Who art in Heaven,” Heaven according to the Catechism does “does not refer to a place but to God’s majesty and His presence in the hearts of the just.” (CCC 2802) God is not outside of us, somewhere off in the distance, far away, so that if you try hard enough and get your act together, maybe you will be good enough or strong enough one day to climb the mountain of God and see Him. No! The Most Holy Trinity dwells in your soul. He is a lot closer than you imagined. All you have to do is turn and find Him within you. Jesus said to St Faustina, My Kingdom on earth is My Life in the human soul. Diary 1784

During this decade think of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit dwelling in you.

Saint John of the Cross

In The Spiritual Canticle, John of the Cross, writes: “Oh, then, soul…so anxious to know the dwelling place of your Beloved so you may go in search of him and be united with him, now we are telling you that you yourself are his dwelling and his secret inner room and hiding place. There is reason for you to be elated and joyful in seeing that all your good and hope is so close as to be within you, or better, that you cannot be without him. Behold, exclaims the Bridegroom, the kingdom of God is within you [Lk. 17:21]. And his servant, the apostle St. Paul, declares: You are the temple of God [2 Cor. 6:16]. It brings special happiness to a person to understand that God is never absent…What more do you want, O soul! And what else do you search for outside, when within yourself you possess your riches, delights, satisfaction, fullness, and kingdom - your Beloved whom you desire and seek? Be joyful and gladdened in your interior recollection with him, for you have him so close to you. Desire him there, adore him there. Do not go in pursuit of him outside yourself. You will only become distracted and wearied thereby, and you shall not find him, or enjoy him more securely, or sooner, or more intimately than by seeking him within you. There is but one difficulty: Even though he does abide within you, he is hidden. Nevertheless, it is vital for you to know his hiding place so you may search for him there with assuredness.” - Spiritual Canticle Stanza 1

The Sermon on the Mount

In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus taught: “When you pray, go to your inner room and, when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in that secret place, and your Father who sees all that is done in secret will reward you.”

At some point each day, get yourself a cup of coffee, then put yourself in a place of silence and solitude, in the shower, in your bedroom, or study, in your car, out in nature, and say to yourself, God is in my soul. Then think about that reality. Let it sink in. Then talk to Him from the heart, honestly and without a filter. Don’t turn things over and over in your mind in an endless loop that wears you out and causes more anxiety. Tell God what is on your mind. And then don’t run away. Give Him some time to respond to you. If you wait around, you may be surprised by what He inspires within you. And don’t be afraid to just rest in His presence, for that is the greatest prayer of all. For he says, Come to me all you who labor and are weary and I will give you rest!

The one source of security

There in only one source of security in life – God alone. God alone is unchanging while everything around you will be changing. There is only one place that is not shifting sand, one thing that is unshakable - God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit dwelling within your soul.

“Let nothing trouble you / Let nothing frighten youEverything passes / God never changesPatience / Obtains allWhoever has God / Wants for nothingGod alone is enough.” - Saint Teresa of Avila

Elizabeth of the Trinity

St. Elizabeth of the Trinity writes: God in me, I in him: let that be our motto. How good is this presence of God in us, in the hidden holiness of our soul! It is there that we always find him – even if we no longer feel his presence, he is still there, indeed he has drawn even closer to us!”

The Most Holy Trinity dwelling in your soul is your fortress against which nothing can assail you, not men, not even the forces of hell.

Psalm 62:

In God alone there is rest for my soul, from him comes my safety;

with him alone for my rock, my safety, my fortress, I can never fall.

How many times will you come rushing at a man, all of you, to bring him down like a wall already leaning over, like a rampart undermined?

Deceit their sole intention, their delight is to mislead; with lies on their lips they bless aloud, while cursing inwardly.   (pause)

Rest in God alone, my soul! He is the source of my hope;

with him alone for my rock, my safety, my fortress, I can never fall;

rest in God, my safety, my glory, the rock of my strength.

In God, I find shelter; rely on him people, at all times; unburden your hearts to him, God is a shelter for us.   (pause)

Ordinary men are only a puff of wind, important men delusion; put both in the scales and up they go, lighter than a puff of wind.

Put no reliance on extortion, no empty hopes in robbery; though riches may increase, keep your heart detached.

God has spoken once, twice I have heard this: it is for God to be strong, for you,

Lord, to be loving; and you yourself repay man as his works deserve.
