Fall 2009 Course Offerings
Salvation History (The Old Testament)
Many Catholics listen to the Scripture readings every Sunday but fail to understand the big picture of the story. This class opens the Bible in a new and exciting way that invites every student to live out the drama of salvation in their own lives. From Genesis to Maccabees, participants will take a twelve-session journey through the faithfulness and love of the Father. This is a foundational course that will bring deeper meaning and joy to encountering both the Old and New Testament readings at Mass and to all future Bible studies. The primary text for this course is the Bible. A workbook with class notes in a binder to supplement this course is available for purchase.
Life of Christ (The Gospels)
To know Jesus is to love Him. This course is a twelve-session walk with Jesus from the cradle to the cross. Students will come to a greater understanding of the identity of Jesus and how He is the fulfillment of God’s promises to His people. Journeying through Matthew, the course will weave together all four gospels giving participants a fuller picture of Christ Jesus and how His life is carried forward into the Church. The primary text for this course is the Bible. A supplemental text will be available for purchase.
Faith Foundations I
Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen believed that there are not even one hundred people who truly dislike the Catholic Church, but that there are millions who hate what they wrongly believe it to be. Faith Foundations I is a journey in understanding the faith we profess. It is a twelve-session walk through the summary of truths known as the Creed. Students will come to a fuller understanding of each of these truths and how they fit into the Biblical story of salvation. Who is God? What is the purpose of our existence? Why did God become man? Is Mary really the Mother of God? And... With thousands of Christian denominations, how do we know that the Catholic faith is in fact the true one— the Church established by Jesus Himself? Students will leave this class understanding Church teaching on these questions and many others, and will know how to live the fullness of the Catholic faith. The primary text for this course is the Catechism of the Catholic Church. A workbook with class notes in a binder to supplment this course is available for purchase.
Virtue: The Pursuit of Happiness
The Christian life is often thought of as necessarily safe and dull. This class explains why the life of Christian virtue is not only the path to true happiness, but is filled with adventure. Christian living gives life meaning and is the most fulfilling path to happiness. This class teaches why the virtues are the way to our happiness and how to live a virtuous life. The main text for this twelve-session course is the Catechism of the Catholic Church. A workbook with class notes in a binder to supplement this course is available to purchase.
